If you are thinking about suicide, or worried about someone who is, help is available now. In the United States, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time. Outside the US, findahelpline.com lists free, confidential lines by country. If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. This year marks the third and final year of the 2024–2026 theme set by the International Association for Suicide Prevention: Changing the Narrative on Suicide, with the call to action Start the Conversation.
The idea behind it is straightforward. Silence and stigma make it harder for people to say they are struggling, and harder for the people around them to ask. Changing the narrative means making those conversations ordinary rather than frightening.
Asking directly does not plant the idea
One of the most persistent fears is that asking someone about suicide will make things worse. Suicide prevention organisations are consistent on this point: asking directly and calmly does not increase risk, and it often brings relief, because the person no longer has to carry it alone.
If you are worried about someone, a direct question is better than a vague one. "Are you thinking about suicide?" is clearer and kinder than hinting around it.
What starting the conversation actually looks like
- Pick a private moment. Somewhere you will not be interrupted, with time to listen.
- Say what you have noticed. "You have seemed really down lately" opens the door without accusing.
- Ask, then listen. Resist the urge to fix, argue or lecture. Being heard matters more than being advised.
- Take it seriously. Do not dismiss what they say or promise to keep it secret if their safety is at risk.
- Connect them to help. Offer to call or text 988 together, or to help them contact a doctor or counsellor.
- Follow up. A message the next day tells someone the conversation was not a one-off.
If the person struggling is you
You do not have to wait until things feel like an emergency to reach out. Tell one person you trust. Call or text 988, or use a line listed on findahelpline.com. Crisis lines are for people who are struggling, not only for people in immediate danger.
Why this belongs on a motivation site
Motivation content often tells people to push harder, grind through and never quit. That message has its place, but it can land badly on someone who is exhausted in a way effort does not fix. Strength also looks like saying "I am not okay" and letting someone help.
This year's call to action asks all of us to make that easier. Start the conversation.
