The "Black Mamba" nickname is the part most people meet first — a shorthand for a particular approach to work that outlived the playing career itself. It belonged to a guard who spent all twenty of his professional seasons with a single team, the Los Angeles Lakers, and who is widely counted among the best to have played the game.
