Biography
Readers usually meet him through a line about the pursuit of God — the insistence that knowing God is not the same as knowing about him. That thread runs through the two books he is still read for, *The Pursuit of God* (1948) and *The Knowledge of the Holy* (1961), which pressed evangelical readers towards reverence, contemplative prayer and a conscious awareness of God's presence rather than mere assent to doctrine.
Tozer was a pastor and preacher in the Christian and Missionary Alliance, and also worked as an editor. Born in Pennsylvania in 1897, he wrote within evangelicalism and drew on the Holiness movement and Keswick spirituality — traditions concerned with sanctification and the inner life rather than with technique or programme.
His recurring subjects were holiness, self-denial and death to self: themes that make for uncomfortable quoting but explain why the devotional writing outlasted him. By the time of his death in 1963, he had become one of the more influential voices in twentieth-century evangelical devotional literature, and the books have stayed in circulation on that strength.
