Biography
The quotes that circulate today usually come back to one idea: a fighting method should not be a fixed set of forms. That was the thinking behind Jeet Kune Do, the approach he founded and treated less as a style than as a new school of martial arts thought. He built it out of his own experience of unarmed fighting and self-defence, and out of an eclectic mix of ideas that drew on Zen Buddhist and Taoist philosophy.
He was born at the Chinese Hospital in San Francisco on 27 November 1940, and worked across both Hong Kong and the United States as a martial artist, actor and filmmaker. The five feature-length martial arts films he starred in as an adult are what most audiences know him by, and they are widely credited with helping to popularise the martial arts film during the 1970s and with pushing Hong Kong action cinema out to a much larger audience.
He is generally regarded as the first Chinese film star with genuinely global reach, and as one of the most influential martial artists cinema has produced. He died on 20 July 1973. His work continues to be published and archived at brucelee.com.
