Biography

The idea most people know him for — that species change slowly over generations, and that survival and reproduction do the sorting — arrived only after years of patient assembly. He collected specimens and observations while travelling the world, then spent a long stretch comparing fossils, working out why organisms are distributed across the globe the way they are, and studying what breeders had achieved with domesticated animals. Natural selection was the piece that tied it together: a mechanism connecting ordinary variation to which individuals live and leave offspring. He held the material back and kept refining it before publishing.

He also worked in the open, in a sense. He wrote to a wide circle of correspondents, putting arguments and evidence in front of peers to see what survived scrutiny. His prose was built to take a reader through a cumulative case step by step rather than assert a conclusion, and he made a point of anticipating objections and suggesting ways his claims might be tested — an approach that gave later researchers something to work with.

On the Origin of Species turned a mass of scattered observations into a single coherent framework. The tone was modest; the implications were not, reaching into theology, philosophy and social thought. Darwin kept going afterwards, extending the same reasoning to plants, to emotions, and to human ancestry, looking for continuity across living things. Poor health did not stop the output. His home functioned as a working site of inquiry.

Born in Shrewsbury in 1809 and dead in 1882, he left a research tradition rather than a closed argument. Evolutionary thinking underpins modern genetics, ecology and medicine, and feeds into conservation and agriculture. Public disputes have not gone away, but the field has grown with new tools. What tends to endure alongside the science is the image of the unhurried naturalist — the person who looks carefully and argues from evidence — and the shift he helped bring about, from biology that describes to biology that explains.
