Biography

The nickname that follows him around — "Prince of Preachers" — was not something he claimed, but it stuck, and it is still how many Christians refer to him today. Quotes from his sermons circulate far beyond the denomination he belonged to, picked up by readers who may know nothing about Baptist history and simply respond to the directness of the man's speech.

He was an English Particular Baptist, born at Kelvedon in 1834. Within his own tradition he was a forceful presence rather than a quiet one: he defended the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith at a time when doing so put him at odds with much of the surrounding church culture, and he set himself against the liberal and pragmatic theological currents gaining ground around him. That willingness to argue a position in public, and to keep arguing it, is a large part of why his material still gets shared.

Spurgeon died in 1892. More than a century on, his influence has not stayed confined to Particular Baptists or to Britain — his words are read and repeated by Christians across a range of denominations.
