Biography

Most people meet him through the voice — a narration over footage of something alive, explained clearly enough that a child follows it and precisely enough that a specialist doesn't wince. That combination is the whole of the work. As a broadcaster and natural historian, he built nature documentaries that did not just show animals but changed what audiences understood themselves to be watching, and in doing so pushed ecological awareness into ordinary viewing hours.

He was born in Isleworth, England, on 8 May 1926, and worked as both a biologist and a television producer, which explains a good deal about how the programmes turned out. The early material shows two things held together that often pull apart: careful exposition on one side, conceptual rigour on the other. Neither was sacrificed for the other. The habit underneath it was disciplined reflection — thinking a thing through before saying it, then saying it simply.

The mid-career work widened. He took on historical, social and technical complexity rather than staying with the material that had already proved it worked. Disagreement helped; where opponents challenged his methods, the result was more exact statements of what he actually meant. That is a slower way to build a body of work, but it is more durable.

By the later years he had become a point of reference for others — someone whose approach balanced innovation against continuity rather than choosing one. What he left behind functions less as an archive than as a way of asking questions about the natural world, which is the more useful inheritance.
