Biography

Readers who come across David Brooks through a talk or a quotation about character are usually meeting him by way of two books: The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, published in 2011, and The Road to Character, which followed in 2015. Both came out through Random House, and both sit inside a larger body of work — seven non-fiction books since 2000, five with Random House and two with Simon and Schuster.

The books grew out of a career in commentary rather than academia. Brooks writes an opinion column for The New York Times and has contributed to the PBS NewsHour, work that put his political and cultural arguments in front of a broad audience over many years.

His position on the political map is contested, which he seems content to leave that way. He has called himself a "moderate Republican"; others reading the same record have described him as centrist, as a moderate conservative, or simply as conservative.

Born in Toronto on 11 August 1961, he is Canadian by birth and American by nationality.
