Biography
The words that reach most readers under his name come from a man who spent decades giving orders at the highest level the United States Army offers. Douglas MacArthur was a general in two of the largest conflicts America fought in the twentieth century — the Second World War and Korea — and he reached the rank of General of the Army, a distinction held by only five people.
His record ran long before those commands. He served with distinction in the First World War, then took the post of chief of staff of the US Army from 1930 to 1935. In 1942 he became Supreme Commander of the Southwest Pacific Area, holding that role until 1945. When the war ended he stayed on as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, overseeing the occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1951, and from 1950 to 1951 he also headed the United Nations Command in the Korean War.
He remains the only person ever appointed Field Marshal in the Philippine Army. Born in Little Rock in 1880, he died in 1964.
