Biography
Three times he took British expeditions south to the Antarctic, and it is that record of leading men into one of the least forgiving places on earth that keeps his name in circulation among people who talk about endurance and command under pressure.
He was Anglo-Irish, born at Kilkea Castle on 15 February 1874, and alongside his exploring he served as a military officer. He is counted among the principal figures of what came to be called the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration — the stretch of years when the continent was still largely unmapped and reaching it at all was the achievement.
He was knighted, and died on 5 January 1922. The detail of what happened on those three expeditions is where his reputation actually sits; the outline above is only the frame around it.
