Biography
The name that keeps coming up whenever people talk about alternative R&B belongs to a singer and songwriter from Long Beach, born in October 1987. Music critics have repeatedly credited him as one of the people who opened that territory up — a way of making R&B that didn't have to sound like anything already on the radio.
He works as a singer-songwriter and a rapper, and the recognition has followed: two Grammy Awards and a Brit Award. He keeps his own outlet at blonded.co.
The material on record here is deliberately spare, which fits an artist known for controlling when and how his work reaches people. What is documented is the influence — the sense among people who write about music that the genre looks different because he was in it.
