Biography

If you have come across a line of his quoted about memory, or about the way a story can hold a whole country's history inside a family, the source is a Colombian writer who spent his working life proving that the fantastic and the factual could occupy the same sentence. Magical realism has become the shorthand for what Gabriel García Márquez did, though in his hands it functioned less as decoration than as a method — a way of carrying history and memory in prose that ordinary reportage could not hold.

He was born in Aracataca, on Colombia's Caribbean coast, in 1927, and worked as a journalist as well as a novelist and short story writer. His early writing was marked not by flourish but by a willingness to take apart received assumptions and to state a problem more plainly than it had been stated before. Clarity, in the account of his development, came first and then hardened into a working principle. Travel, reading and correspondence supplied the rest.

The middle stretch of his career was a matter of consolidation and widening scope. Critics and rivals pressed him, and the pressure sharpened the work; what had been tentative in the early books arrived, in the major publications, as settled statement. He alternated between analysis and construction rather than settling into one mode, and even the pieces that failed served as tests for what came next. The approach travelled through other writers and readers who carried it to audiences he never addressed directly.

Later he turned to putting his own house in order — editions, notes, reflective essays, the business of fixing the best version of an insight. The surviving drafts and corrections show how provisional much of it was in the making. He died in 2014. His books remain a starting point for writers who disagree with him as much as for those who follow him.
