Biography

The quotes that circulate under his name tend to be the ones that turn an argument inside out in a single line. That was his method: paradox, used deliberately, as a way of making a familiar idea strange enough to be looked at again. It is the reason his sentences still get clipped and shared nearly a century after he stopped writing them.

He worked as a journalist and a poet, and he wrote as a Christian apologist — arguing for belief and, more broadly, for tradition, at a time when both were being loudly dismissed. The combination of wit and that defence of the old made him one of the dominant literary figures in England in the early twentieth century.

Born in Kensington in 1874, he died in 1936.
