Biography
She was the first person to win the Triple Crown of Acting, and the second person — and first woman — to complete the EGOT. Those two records tend to be what people cite first when her name comes up, and they sit behind the nickname that followed her for most of her working life: the First Lady of American Theatre.
Born in Washington, D.C., in 1900, she worked as an actress in the United States and later wrote about her own life. The recognition kept coming late: President Ronald Reagan gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honour, in 1986, and she received the National Medal of Arts two years after that.
She died in 1993, at 92.
