Biography

The phrase that carries Immanuel Kant's name into most modern arguments is his critical project — the attempt to hold autonomy, knowledge and judgment together in a single account. He worked as both a philosopher and an anthropologist in the Kingdom of Prussia, and what survives of him is less a set of conclusions than a method: take an inherited assumption, restate the problem until it becomes tractable, then test whether the argument still stands under pressure.

He was born in Königsberg in 1724. His training combined strict attention to method with a taste for putting whole fields together, and his earliest work was marked not by novel results but by the clearness with which it stated things — a quality he went on to treat as a working principle rather than a stylistic preference. Correspondence, travel and steady reading gave him the equipment to take on the intellectual problems of his time; he could sit with small details while keeping the shape of the larger structure in view.

In mid-career he widened the range of questions he addressed and sharpened his technique against rivals and critics, whose objections he seems to have used rather than avoided. Publications and lectures turned tentative positions into settled statements, and he moved between analysis and construction rather than committing to one mode. Students and correspondents carried the approach past any single institution. Later he turned to tidying and systematising the work, and the surviving drafts and corrections show both the rigour and the false starts behind the finished prose. He died in 1804. His writings remained a starting point for followers and opponents alike, and each generation has read them again with whatever new tools it had.
