Biography

Twenty seasons in the NFL is the number that tends to stop people. Jerry Rice played all of them as a wide receiver, winning three Super Bowl titles with the San Francisco 49ers and finishing his career with two shorter spells, first at the Oakland Raiders and then the Seattle Seahawks. The career totals he accumulated across that span are what the Pro Football Hall of Fame points to when its biography of him calls him "the most prolific wide receiver in NFL history with staggering career totals".

Born in Starkville in October 1962, Rice is widely regarded as the best wide receiver the game has produced, and the lists bear that out. The Sporting News put him second on its 1999 ranking of Football's 100 Greatest Players, behind Jim Brown. Eleven years later, NFL Films' The Top 100: NFL's Greatest Players, made for NFL Network, placed him first — not just among receivers, but among every player in league history.

He has also written as an author, and maintains a site at jerryricefootball.com. For audiences who come to him for something other than highlight reels, the appeal is fairly simple: a body of work built over two decades and a record book that reflects it.
