Biography

Most readers meet him through one book. Knowing God, published in 1973, became a bestseller and remains the work his name is attached to — a book about the character of God written for ordinary readers rather than for the seminar room. It is the reason a theologian who spent his working life in lecture halls and pulpits still turns up in quotations and clips decades later.

Born in Twyning, England, in July 1926, he later settled in Canada and worked in the low-church Anglican and Reformed traditions as a cleric, writer and teacher. He was widely regarded as one of the most influential evangelicals in North America, and his influence ran through projects as much as through his own writing: he served as general editor of the English Standard Version Bible, put his name to the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, sat on the advisory board of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, and took part in the 1994 ecumenical volume Evangelicals and Catholics Together.

His final academic post was at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he was the board of governors' Professor of Theology from 1996. He held it for twenty years, retiring in 2016 as his eyesight failed. He died on 17 July 2020, days short of his ninety-fourth birthday.
