Biography
Readers usually meet this name at the bottom of a quotation rather than in a history book, and the material that survives about the man himself is thin. What is on record and easy to check is the institution his name is attached to: the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois.
The aquarium is a public one, open to visitors, and stands as one of the oldest continually operating non-governmental aquariums in the United States. That last detail matters more than it first sounds. It has kept going, without being run by government, for long enough that very few comparable institutions in the country can say the same.
Beyond that, the available record does not support much more. Anyone wanting the fuller story of the aquarium bearing the name can go to sheddaquarium.org.
