Biography
Most people who come across Jordan Belfort now meet him as a speaker on stages and in sales clips — a man selling advice on persuasion off the back of a story that ended in a guilty plea. That story is the reason the material carries the weight it does, and also the reason it comes with an asterisk.
Born in the Bronx in July 1962, Belfort worked as a stockbroker and businessman before pleading guilty in 1999 to fraud and related charges tied to stock-market manipulation and a penny-stock operation run out of a boiler room. He served 22 months in prison. That sentence came under an agreement in which he became an FBI informant, wore a wire, and testified against a number of his former partners and subordinates.
He turned the account into a memoir, The Wolf of Wall Street, published in 2007. Martin Scorsese adapted it for the screen in 2013, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role, and the film is how the majority of his current audience first heard the name. Belfort now works as a motivational speaker and author, and maintains a site at jordanbelfort.com.
