Biography

For seven straight years, from 1999 to 2005, he crossed the finish line in Paris as the winner of the Tour de France — a run no rider had managed before. That record is the reason most people know the name, and it is also the reason the reversal that followed drew so much attention.

Born in Plano, Texas, on 18 September 1971, Armstrong built a career as a professional road racing cyclist and became internationally famous through those Tour victories. He retired from professional cycling in 2011. The following year, an investigation into doping allegations concluded that he had used performance-enhancing drugs across his career. The seven titles were taken from him, and he was banned for life from all sanctioned cycling events.

He has also written about his own life, and his material tends to reach audiences through that dual frame: the years at the top of the sport, and the collapse of the record that defined them.
