Biography
For thirty-three years, the same face turned up on American television screens to talk to small children as though they were worth talking to. Mister Rogers' Neighborhood ran from 1968 to 2001, and Rogers was not just its host but its creator and showrunner — the person responsible for what the programme was, not only the person in front of the camera.
Born in Latrobe on 20 March 1928, Rogers worked as a Presbyterian minister as well as a television personality and author, and handled the marionettes that appeared on the programme. The ordination and the puppetry are not separate facts about the career so much as two halves of the same one: the pulpit training and the children's programme ran alongside each other for decades.
Rogers died on 27 February 2003, less than two years after the series ended. What survives in circulation now — the clips, the quoted lines about feelings and about being liked exactly as you are — comes from that single long-running body of work, made for preschoolers and, as it turned out, kept by the adults they became.
