Biography
For seventeen seasons at Alabama, from 2007 to 2023, he ran the programme that everything else in college football was measured against. Six claimed national titles came out of that stretch, plus one unclaimed, from nine appearances in the championship game, alongside nine SEC titles and ten SEC West division championships. That record is the reason clips of him talking about standards, preparation and process circulate far outside football.
Alabama was the last stop, not the only one. Before it he was head coach at Toledo, Michigan State and LSU, and he also took the top job in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins — four universities and one professional franchise across a career that ended with him widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches the sport has produced.
Born on 31 October 1951 in Fairmont, he now works in television rather than on the sideline, appearing as an analyst on ESPN's College GameDay. The audience for his remarks on discipline and consistency is, if anything, larger there than it was when he was coaching.
