Biography

The idea most people know him for is simple to state and was difficult to argue: that the Earth moves, and the sun sits at the centre of the arrangement. Working out a new cosmic geometry meant setting aside an assumption that had gone unquestioned for centuries, and it is that willingness to test a routine belief — rather than the arithmetic itself — that keeps his name in circulation among people who have never read a page of astronomy.

He was born in Toruń, in Royal Prussia, in 1473, and worked as an astronomer and church canon, with a legal training that fed into his public duties. Reading, correspondence and travel gave him a wide field of comparison when he assessed a problem, and observation and construction reinforced one another in his working practice. Those around him noticed an economy in how he made an argument, a way of reducing a complicated matter to something manageable. Much of what looked at first like small clarification turned out to be the ground everything after would stand on, whether by extension or by dispute.

Later in his career the scope widened without loosening the precision. Publications and demonstrations turned insight into technique that others could reproduce, and criticism sharpened the way he stated his claims and marked their limits. Collaborators and students carried the method into neighbouring subjects. He died in 1543.

Surviving drafts and notebooks show how uncertain the path to that finished clarity was — useful evidence against the idea that important work arrives complete. His conclusions have long since been revised with better instruments, but the habits behind them, patient attention and a refusal to accept a claim simply because it is old, are what readers still take from him.
