Biography

If you've come across his name attached to a quote about vision, persistence or the value of an idea held in the mind before it is built, the man behind it spent his working life on alternating current power systems, the induction motor and early concepts of wireless transmission. Those three things are the shorthand for Nikola Tesla, an inventor and electrical engineer born in Smiljan in the Austrian Empire, in what is now Croatia, on 10 July 1856.

He came up as a careful student and observer, and the habit stuck: small experiments repeated until they became patterns, and patterns refined until they became a method someone else could follow. Teachers, books and travel widened what he thought possible; argument and collaboration did the work of sharpening it. From early on he was willing to question accepted practice and test the alternative rather than assume it.

Mid-career brought larger projects and the pressures that come with them — backers, rivals, institutions expecting results. Money was sometimes short, and setbacks were frequent enough that he came to treat them as information about what mattered rather than as reasons to stop. Public dispute over his claims tested them and, where they held, strengthened them. Through writing and mentoring, he passed on the parts of the craft that are usually hard to hand over.

His later years went into the record: notes, teaching, and standards meant for people who would come after. He died on 7 January 1943. Institutions have marked the milestones since, but the more durable trace is in the archives and in the ongoing arguments among engineers and historians about what his work meant and where it still leads.
