Biography
Most people meet him through a clip: a calm, unhurried voice taking apart an argument about power, usually without raising the volume. That side of his work — the critique of power — is only half of it. The other half is generative grammar, the branch of linguistics his thinking reframed, and the two strands have run alongside each other for most of his working life.
He was born in Philadelphia in December 1928. The habits that show up in the public material — the slow, deliberate reasoning, the insistence on getting the formulation exact — were built early, in a practice of disciplined reflection and careful exposition rather than in showmanship.
His early work paired conceptual rigour with an interest in being understood; the mid-career writing widened out, taking on historical, social and technical problems at once. Disagreement was part of the method. Opponents pressed him, and the pressure produced sharper statements of principle on both sides. In later years he became a fixed point that other thinkers argued with or measured themselves against, holding a balance between new ideas and long-held ones.
What survives is less a shelf of finished conclusions than a way of asking questions — which is why the clips keep circulating. His writing and archive are collected at chomsky.info.
