Biography
Most people meet him through a page a day. *My Utmost for His Highest*, the daily devotional that carries his name, is the reason he is still read more than a century after his death, and it remains the work he is best known for.
Behind the book is a life that was short by any measure. Born in Aberdeen in July 1874, Chambers worked as an evangelist and teacher in the early twentieth century, associated with the Holiness Movement, and died in November 1917 at the age of forty-three.
The available record on him is spare — a Scot, a writer and theologian, a preacher whose reputation rests less on institutional position than on what was set down in print. That the devotional outlasted him by so long says most of what can be said about the reach of his teaching.
