Biography
The name that comes up in locker-room speeches and leadership seminars usually belongs to the man in the suit on the Miami sideline. Pat Riley has been president of the Miami Heat since 1995, and he took the head coaching job in the same year, holding it until 2003. He returned to the bench in 2005 and coached through 2008, then went back to running the organisation from the front office.
Before any of that, he played in the NBA himself — a career on the floor that preceded the decades he spent directing others from the sideline and the executive suite. That combination, player then coach then executive, is part of why his remarks on preparation and standards get quoted by people who have never watched a full basketball game.
He was born on 20 March 1945, in Rome, and is American. What survives in the clips is mostly the coach's voice: the man responsible for what a team did on a given night, speaking about the work that came before it.
