Biography
The phrase most people first encounter him through is "the learning organisation" — the idea that a company can be built to keep learning rather than simply to keep running. That framing comes from The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization, the book that carries Peter Senge's name into management talks, training rooms and leadership reading lists.
Senge is an American systems scientist, born in 1947 and originally from Stanford. His working home is the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he is a senior lecturer, and he also holds a co-faculty position at the New England Complex Systems Institute. Both attachments point at the same thread in his work: looking at organisations as systems, with parts that interact, rather than as collections of separate problems to be fixed one at a time.
Alongside the teaching and writing, he founded the Society for Organizational Learning, giving the ideas an institutional base beyond a single book or campus. That combination — economist and educator, researcher and practitioner — is why his material tends to be quoted by people running organisations rather than only by people studying them.
