Biography
For most people who came across him, Robert Schuller arrived through a television set. Hour of Power began broadcasting weekly in 1970 and became the vehicle that carried his preaching well beyond the congregation in front of him. He kept at it until he retired in 2006, and the programme has now run for more than fifty years, presented since his time by his grandson, Bobby Schuller.
The church came first. He began pastoring in Garden Grove, California in 1955, and stayed for five decades. Over that stretch he oversaw the building of two churches on the same ground: the Garden Grove Community Church chapel, which held 500 people, and later the Crystal Cathedral, with room for 2,200. The jump between those two numbers is a fair shorthand for what happened to his ministry across that period.
He was born in Alton in 1926 and died in 2015. Alongside the pulpit and the broadcasts he worked as a motivational speaker and wrote books, which is how much of his material still circulates — the sermons and the writing tend to reach people separately from the church that produced them.
