Biography

If you have come across a line of hers attached to a photograph or read out over music, the reason it lands is the thing she is credited with inventing: a poetry that speaks from the inside. Sappho wrote lyric verse, and she set it in a register close enough to private speech that readers centuries later still hear it as someone talking rather than declaiming. That intimate voice is the shorthand people use for her contribution, and it is the reason her work keeps circulating far outside the language it was made in.

She came from Lesbos, in ancient Greece, and worked as a poet and composer. What is described of her method is unglamorous: careful attention, a habit of testing assumptions rather than repeating them, and an economy in how she put things that made difficult material easier to hold. Reading, correspondence and travel gave her points of comparison. Colleagues noticed the compression. Work that looked at the time like small clarifications turned out to be the ground others built on, either by adopting her terms or arguing with them.

In her later work she turned towards gathering things up and passing them on, teaching rather than only producing. Drafts and notebooks that survive show the uncertainty behind the finished lines, which is often the most useful thing about her for anyone trying to make something. Her influence is not confined to the texts themselves; it shows up in how people learn to pay attention.
