Biography
The name attached to most everyday talk about the unconscious — the idea that what drives us is not always available to us — belongs to a neurologist from Freiberg in the Austrian Empire. Freud, born in 1856, built psychoanalysis into a body of theory that recast what it meant to ask questions about the mind, and the vocabulary he introduced has outlasted most of the debates he had with his contemporaries.
His early work paired careful conceptual argument with an attention to how ideas were written and explained. Later writings reached further, taking on historical, social and technical problems that his first formulations had not addressed. Disagreement was part of that process: critics forced him to tighten his methods, and the disputes produced sharper statements of what he actually claimed.
By the end of his life in 1939 he had become a fixed reference point in the field — a figure who held together the new and the inherited rather than choosing between them. What survives is less an archive than a way of framing enquiry, which is why his terms still surface in conversations far from clinical practice.
