Biography
The clips that circulate tend to come from his preaching and his apologetics — the case for belief made to an audience that was often sceptical of it. That work reached a wide readership through *The Reason for God* (2008), which became a New York Times bestseller, and through *Making Sense of God* (2016), written as a prequel to it, aimed at readers not yet ready for the arguments of the earlier book.
He was a Presbyterian pastor and a Reformed theologian, and the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. Alongside that congregational work he co-founded Redeemer City to City and served as its chairman; the organisation trains pastors for service in cities around the world.
His other bestselling books include *The Prodigal God* (2008) and *Prayer* (2014). Born in Allentown in 1950, he died on 19 May 2023.
