Biography
For twenty seasons, from 1976 to 1996, he ran the dugout for the Los Angeles Dodgers. That is the stretch most people mean when they invoke his name — two decades with one club in Major League Baseball, long enough that the job and the man became hard to separate.
Before the managing came the playing. Thomas Charles Lasorda was a professional pitcher, and the pitching came first in the way it often does for men who end up in charge: you learn the game from inside it, then you learn to run it. He was born in Norristown in 1927.
In 1997, the year after he stopped managing, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame — not as a player, but as a manager. Later work included voice acting. He died in January 2021.
