Biography

The name turns up most often on locker room walls and in speeches about effort and standards, usually attached to a line about winning or preparation. The record behind it is a seven-year stretch in Green Bay in the 1960s, where as head coach of the Packers he took five NFL Championships, three of them consecutively, then won the first two Super Bowls, played at the close of the 1966 and 1967 seasons.

He came out of Brooklyn, born in 1913, and worked in professional football as both a coach and an executive in the NFL. He played the game as well as coached it. He died in 1970, at 57.

Much of what gets quoted from him now comes second-hand, passed around long after the fact. What gives it weight for the people repeating it is that the results were public and consecutive: a team that kept winning championships under the same man, in a short span, at the top level of the sport. He is widely counted among the best coaches and leaders American sport has produced.
